Urgent & Critical Care
Understanding the difference between urgent care and critical care can help pet parents make informed decisions during stressful situations.
- Urgent care is intended for medical issues that require prompt attention but are not immediately life-threatening. These situations should be addressed as soon as possible to prevent complications or worsening symptoms.
- Critical care is reserved for severe, life-threatening conditions that require intensive monitoring, advanced treatment, and immediate medical intervention. Pets receiving critical care often need continuous observation and rapid response to changes in their condition.
Both levels of care are essential. If you are unsure which level of care your pet needs, it is always best to seek guidance and call us as soon as possible. Acting early can help prevent complications and improve outcomes.
Signs Your Pet May Need Urgent Care
Urgent care may be appropriate if your pet is experiencing:
- Vomiting or diarrhea that continues or worsens
- Limping or sudden mobility changes
- Minor wounds, cuts, or swelling
- Ear infections or painful skin issues
- Eye irritation or injury
- Urinary discomfort or straining
- Sudden changes in appetite or behavior
These conditions may not be immediately life-threatening, but they should be evaluated promptly to prevent escalation.
Signs That Your Pet Needs Emergency Care
Emergency or critical care is recommended if your pet is experiencing:
- Difficulty breathing or labored breathing
- Collapse, weakness, or inability to stand
- Seizures or repeated seizure activity
- Severe trauma, such as being hit by a car
- Heatstroke
- Uncontrolled bleeding
- Suspected toxin or foreign body ingestion
- Severe allergic reactions, including facial swelling or hives
- Signs of extreme pain or distress
These situations could be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention. Pets requiring critical care often need advanced diagnostics, intensive monitoring, and ongoing medical support to stabilize their condition.
When in Doubt, Seek Care
Pets cannot tell us when something is wrong, and conditions can worsen quickly. If your pet’s symptoms are severe, sudden, or concerning, seeking immediate care is the safest choice. Early evaluation helps ensure pets receive the appropriate level of care as quickly as possible.
If you are unsure whether your pet needs urgent or emergency care, contact us for guidance on the next best step.
What Pet Parents Can Expect During Evaluation
When a pet arrives for urgent or critical care, a prompt assessment helps determine the severity of the condition and the level of care needed. Diagnostic testing, monitoring, and treatment recommendations are based on the pet’s symptoms and stability.
Clear communication helps families understand findings, recommended next steps, and treatment options. When needed, ongoing monitoring and supportive care help manage complex or rapidly changing conditions.
Experience Matters During Emergencies
When pets need urgent or critical care, experience and teamwork are essential. A knowledgeable veterinary team works together to assess, monitor, and treat pets during high-stress situations. From rapid decision-making to careful monitoring, coordinated care helps support the best possible outcomes.
Experience across a range of medical and emergency situations allows the team to respond quickly and appropriately when time matters most.

Our nurse Elizabeth was very thorough, professional and kind in preparing the documents. Dr. Pittman and the rest of the staff were all very compassionate and caring!!!Posted on Alejandra ElizabethTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We have always had an exceptional experience with the kind receptionists, techs & Dr. Meyer/Dr. Ramsey. Would highly recommend bringing your fur babies here! Cost is very reasonable compared to other places.Posted on Ashley HernandezTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I've had nothing but great experiences with NSAH. I was recommended to go here for my new pup and have made several visits since May. Staff is always welcoming and helpful. Dr. Youssef is very kind and I really enjoy seeing Elizabeth, when we go. She's so informative and caring. Far from where I live, but so worth it!Posted on DJ ShorttTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Saved our dogs life! Went there to get an ultrasound because another vet had told us our dogs liver was super swollen. They found that our dogs gall bladder was huge and rushed him into surgery. They moved their whole Saturday schedule around to make sure he got his surgery within the hour! They made sure to take great care of him after the surgery as well!!!!Posted on Marsha BonnettTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dr. Youssef, Dr. Pittman and the entire staff At Northstar Animal Hospital are phenomenal! They gave my cat “Lucy” the most amazing, wonderful care. They cared for my girl as if she was their own. They have the expertise, skills, knowledge and more importantly, I believe they truly love the pets that are in their care. And, not only the pets but the family as well. I can never repay them for how they took My Lucy and I under their wings. I pray blessings over Dr. Youssef, Dr.Pittman and the entire Staff.Posted on Chris JTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This is my first time here. I meant to go to another place but ended up here... I got the names confused! Well I'm glad I ended up here because it's a great place. The people are so friendly! And they're so professional! The doctor is very friendly and efficient. He certainly knows what he's doing! Same goes for the assistants. They are pros and know how to handle cats. One thing I love is that I was allowed to be in the room. The last couple times, at other veterinarians, my cat was whisked away and I had no idea what they were doing with him. I loved being able to comfort my cat while he was being examined, etc. in summary, I would certainly recommend North Star! 😊
