Take A Walk In The Park Day

March 15, 2023

March 30th is Take A Walk In The Park Day! This is one occasion our canine companions will be happy to celebrate with us. Many pups love exploring new places! A San Antonio, TX veterinarian offers some ‘pointers’ on taking Fido to the park in this article.

Gear

If you and your furry best friend enjoy impromptu park trips, keep a bag in your car for Fido, so that you always have basic doggy musts with you. Water is at the top of the list. You may want to get a portable water bottle with an attached dispenser, which is easy to use on the go. Your ‘doggy bag’ should also include a spare leash and collar, waste baggies, and a pet-first aid kit. You may also want to add some collapsible plastic dishes.

Leashes

Some parks do allow dogs off-leash. However, unless your four-legged pal is completely trained, it’s best to keep him hooked up. Retractable leashes can be great, but they can be dangerous in certain situations. For instance, if you come across another pooch, Fido could get tangled up.

Safety

Always put safety first. If you notice any dogs that are acting aggressive and/or bullying other pups, go elsewhere. Keep an eye out for snakes and other hazards as well. We share the Lone Star State with quite a few critters … not all of whom want to play with Fido!

Choosing Parks

There are some beautiful parks nearby, such as Hardberger, Panther Springs, McAllister, and Lady Bird Johnson dog parks. You may also find some great spots that are off the beaten path. Before trying a new park, check reviews and ratings. This can help you determine if there are safety issues and/or find out if the park has things like fountains and tables available.

Benefits

Taking Fido to a park is a pawesome way to relax and unwind. The sunshine, fresh air, and pretty scenery are good for both of you! Plus, parks are good spots for catching up with friends or family members with pups of their own. This is also a great chance to enjoy some quiet quality time with your canine buddy. If there’s one thing dogs can teach us, it’s the importance of stopping to smell the roses!
