Why Dogs Need Dog Friends

June 15, 2021

Dog Party Day is June 21st! Having a dog party is a pretty great way to kick off the summer. While our canine companions are extremely loyal and affectionate, they both enjoy and benefit from being able to interact with their own kind. A San Antonio, TX vet explains why in this article.

Socialization

Socialization is at the top of the list for a reason: it’s absolutely crucial to our canine buddies’ mental and emotional development! Exposing little Fido to new places and faces, and letting him meet friendly, well-behaved dogs, will help him grow into a friendly, well-adjusted adult. There is a very short window of time for socialization. This closes by the time a puppy is about 3 months old. That doesn’t mean older dogs can’t be socialized: it just takes longer.

Re-Acclimating

Did your furry friend spend a lot of time at home last year? Just like people, dogs need to readjust as the world opens back up, and get used to interacting with people again. A dog party is a great way to do that! Just make sure all of your canine guests are vaccinated and current on their parasite control.

Petiquette

Doggy playdates are especially important for young dogs. Our canine pals naturally teach each other the do’s and don’ts of good petiquette. Fido can pick up quite a bit by interacting with older pooches. This can be extremely beneficial for teaching him good manners!

Playtime

There’s a reason Fido gets so excited about going to the park. Our canine pals love having the chance to interact with other pups! At the end of the day, we don’t speak the same ‘language’ as our pets do, and we just don’t communicate in the same way. It’s really good for dogs to be able to hang out with their own kind.

Zoomies

Do you have a furry, four-legged bundle of zoom? If so, the dog park may be a huge help. If Fido tires himself out running and playing with his friends, he’ll be a lot calmer at home. Take your pet to the park, and let him let loose for a while. Chances are, by the time you get him back home, he’ll be ready for cuddles and naps.
