Summer Safety for Dogs

July 15, 2020

Living in Texas can be pretty awesome for our canine pals. Fido gets to swim, play outside, and beg for spare burgers at barbeques all year long. However, our scorching summers can be very problematic for Man’s Best Friend. A local San Antonio, TX vet goes over some basics of keeping your dog safe from the heat below.

Grooming

Many of our canine patients are more comfortable in summer with a haircut. Of course, not all dogs should be trimmed. If your pooch has a double coat, that thick fur actually insulates him from the heat. Plus, that type of coat can be permanently damaged if it’s cut wrong. That said, if Fido can be clipped, he may enjoy a cool summer ‘do!

Heat

It won’t take Fido long to overheat on sweltering days. Make sure your furry buddy always has water. If you have a yard, a large house, and/or multiple pups, set out more than one water station. You’ll also need to bring water along for your pet whenever you take him off your property for more than a quick walk. You can get him a water bottle with an attached bowl, or some collapsible plastic dishes. Another fun option is a portable doggy pool.

Schedule

You may need to make some adjustments to your furry friend’s schedule for summer. Walk and play with your pooch in the mornings and evenings, when it’s not quite as hot out. Also, don’t encourage Fido to run or play very much around midday, when it’s hottest. Save those games of Fetch for after dinner!

Paws

Paw care is very important in summer. Dogs’ paws are extremely delicate. Your pup can get painful burns by walking or running over hot surfaces, like tar or asphalt. Stick to soft ground as much as possible, and use paw balm or wax to protect Fido’s cute feet.

Safety

Unless you happen to have a Tesla with dog mode, never leave Fido in the car, even just for a minute. Cars can reach deadly temperatures very quickly in hot weather. Leaving the car running with the AC on isn’t a good solution, either, as this is also dangerous. If your four-legged friend can’t go inside with you at your destination, leave him home.
