Keeping Your Cat Happy and Healthy

September 15, 2019

Cats are known for being very easy keepers. Our feline pals don’t need to be bathed or walked, and you don’t have to worry about training them. (Actually, Fluffy tends to train her humans, rather than it being the other way around.) Making sure your furry friend always has good food, fresh water, and a clean litterbox, will cover her basic needs. However, kitties aren’t entirely independent. These cuddly furballs actually need lots of good TLC in order to thrive! In this article, a local San Antonio, TX vet offers tips on keeping your cat happy and healthy.

Toys/Entertainment

We know, kitties spend a rather ridiculous amount of time sleeping. Set out lots of comfy beds and napping spots for your drowsy pet. It’s also important to make sure that Fluffy has some ways to amuse herself when she actually is awake. Offer your furry buddy lots of toys, and take time to play with her regularly. Your cat will also appreciate some kitty furniture and a window seat with a good view.

Veterinary Care

Coming to see us may not be Fluffy’s favorite thing to do, but it’s definitely in her best interests. Your feline friend should be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on her vaccinations, exams, and parasite control products. At home, keep an eye out for any signs that your kitty may be ill, such as hiding, poor grooming, or vomiting. Cats tend to mask signs of illness, so call your vet immediately if you see anything unusual.

Safety

One of the best things you can do for Fluffy is to simply keep her inside, where she is safe from cars, predators, and other hazards. Of course, even indoor kitties can get into trouble. Fluffy is notoriously mischievous! Do some basic pet-proofing, and remove potential dangers, like toxic plants, chemicals, medication, and wires and cords.

Cuddles and Love

Kitties are very emotional little furballs. They can form very strong bonds with their humans, and often get stressed out and anxious if they feel isolated or afraid. Pay lots of attention to Fluffy! Talk to her, pet her, and let her snooze on your lap. Kitty purrs are one of life’s greatest treasures in our book.
