5 Ways to Keep Your Dog From Running Away

September 15, 2015

Did you know that nearly 14 percent of dogs will get lost at some point during their lives? While all dogs should have a comfy habitat, a good diet, and proper veterinary care, these things won’t necessarily curb your pup’s wanderlust. Even if Fido is getting top-quality care, he may still bolt if the opportunity presents itself. That said, there are some things you can do to reduce the chance of your canine pal running off. A San Antonio, TX veterinarian offers advice on how to keep your dog from running away in this article.

Secure Your Fencing

If Fido spends a lot of time in the yard, make sure that his area is comfortable, and that your fence is sturdy. If your pooch digs, bury chicken wire below the fence line, and weight it down with rocks. If your fence is wobbly, reinforce it, or plant thick hedges in front of it. You’ll also want to be sure that your gate latches securely. A self-closing gate is optional.

Provide Proper Stimulation

Fido can get quite antsy if he’s bored. Make sure your pooch has plenty of fun toys to keep him occupied when you’re at work, and play with him every day. Most of our canine friends enjoy a change of scenery now and then, so vary your furry buddy’s walking route, or indulge him with occasional trips to a doggy park.

Spay/Neuter Surgery

Intact dogs often try to escape looking for romance. You don’t want Fido running off in search of love! Make sure to get your pup spayed or neutered.

Training

Training is very important, both for good doggy manners and safety reasons. Make sure Fido knows and obeys the commands to Sit , Stay , Come , Heel , and Lay Down . That way, if he lunges for a squirrel and pulls the leash out of your hand, you can still stay in control.

Exercise

Some dogs are just bursting with energy. Make sure Fido is getting enough exercise. If you’re not up to long walks, play fetch with your furry pal, or consider getting him an automatic ball thrower.

We also strongly recommend getting your pooch microchipped. If Fido does run away, that tiny little chip could save his life!
