How to Properly Spoil Your Dog

August 1, 2018

Did you know that August 10th is Spoil Your Dog Day? This is a great chance to score some extra tail wags. Good food, proper grooming, and regular veterinary care are all important to your pet’s health and well-being, but really spoiling a dog requires more than that. A San Antonio, TX veterinarian offers tips on pampering Fido below.

Exercise

Making sure Fido is getting plenty of activity is very important. Just be sure to choose the right type of exercise. Not all dogs are well-suited for things like swimming, hiking, or jogging.

Playtime

Playing is great for your canine pal, both mentally and physically. A fun game of Fetch will keep Fido active and entertained. It will also help him burn off his excess energy. Afterwards, he’ll be calmer, and ready for snuggle time and belly rubs. Spend a few minutes a day tossing a ball or toy for your cute pet. Or, play a fun game with him, like Tag.

Treats

Nothing gets that tail wagging like the thought of a tasty snack! Just be sure to only offer your pup healthy treats. While the occasional piece of sausage or bacon is fine, if you share your breakfast with Fido every day, you may find yourself with a furry butterball on your hands . . . and one with bad table manners to boot! Follow your vet’s nutritional recommendations.

Toys

Toys aren’t just fun for dogs. They help keep Fido occupied while you are at work, provide him with beneficial mental stimulation, and help beat the bored-doggy blues. Get your pooch a new plaything to celebrate his special day.

Adventures!

Man’s Best Bud is very curious by nature, and loves to explore new patches of grass. Take Fido to a park, or try a new trail. Even a new walking route will give your pet a nice change of scenery. Always bring water along for your pup, and pick up after him.

Doggy Luxuries

Small things can really help keep your canine buddy comfortable and happy. If you have a yard, your dog may enjoy a doghouse. You can also offer Fido a sandbox to bury things in, or a kiddie pool to splash around in. Doggy beds are also a must.
