5 Ways to Ease Boarding Anxiety

February 15, 2023

Are you going to be leaving town soon? If so, you may be bringing your pup to a kennel while you’re gone. This can make Fido a bit nervous: any change in environment is a lot for dogs to process. However, there are things you can do to make things a bit easier on your canine buddy. A local San Antonio, TX vet goes over some of them in this article.

Practice Separation

If Fido rarely leaves home, save for walks and perhaps trips to the park, it may be a good idea to get him used to it. A trial run, such as an overnight stay, can be a good way to help your pooch ease his way into boarding. If you board at a place that offers doggy daycare, your four-legged friend may also benefit from having time with his friends.

Ask About Perks

If you know or suspect that your canine companion is going to feel nervous and anxious while you are out, ask the kennel about options for things like extra walks and playtime. Fido is always calmer if he’s burned off his zoomies.

Pack Properly

Before packing for your canine pal, you’ll want to find out what you can and can’t bring for your pooch. Kennels all have their own policies on this. Some places prefer to use their things, often because this allows them to ensure that everything is properly cleaned and disinfected. Others allow you to bring your furry friend’s toys and bedding. Ask if you can bring a comfort item, such as a piece of clothing that smells like you. Chew toys and puzzle toys can also keep Fido occupied.

Start Young

If your furry friend is still a puppy, then you can start preparing him by getting him fully crate trained. You’ll also want to talk to your vet and the kennel to determine when little Fido is ready for an overnight stay.

Don’t Delay

We know, Fido’s going to give you that look when you leave, which is going to yank at your heartstrings. Delaying things with long goodbyes isn’t going to help matters any, though. Make that dropoff short and sweet. You can catch up on cuddles when you return!
