Common Misconceptions About Boarding

December 15, 2022

Are you going to be going away for the holidays? If so, you may still be in the process of sorting out who is going to take care of your canine pal. Many people opt for petsitters and family members. These can be easy options, but at the end of the day, boarding is a safer option for most pups. As it turns out, there are some misconceptions about boarding that may be coming into play here. A local San Antonio, TX vet discusses some of them below.

My Pet Will Catch Something

It’s understandable that this would be a concern, as being in close quarters with others does increase the risk of contracting something contagious. However, the more important thing is to realize that, as with people, vaccinations and parasite control will protect your canine buddy against the majority of potential illnesses. Also, keep in mind that reputable kennels are going to be very, very diligent about cleaning and disinfecting their facilities. The only red flag to watch for would be a kennel that doesn’t require proof that your four-legged pal is current on his preventative care.

My Dog Will Be Lonely

Your pooch may be missing you, but don’t assume that he will be in solitary the whole time. He’ll still interact with others. Fido will be walked, checked on, and cared for throughout the day. Assuming that your furry friend is friendly and, as mentioned earlier, current on his vaccines and parasite control, he may even be able to enjoy some doggy playdates. Many kennels also offer options for extra playtime. It won’t hurt to ask!

Fido Will Think I Abandoned Him

Choosing a place that your furry pal likes and feels comfortable in can really go a long way towards helping things go smoothly. To be fair, yes, your pooch may be a bit out of sorts on his first night. (Tip: a trial overnight stay may help with that.) But the main things to consider are your pet’s health and safety. Fido will be waiting for you with tail wags, happy dances, and affectionate kisses when you get back! Plus, he’ll likely get used to his kennel over time, and realize that it’s a temporary spot where he stays sometimes.
