Safe Treats For National Dog Day

August 15, 2022

August 26th is National Dog Day. Our canine companions truly do deserve to be celebrated. Of course, if you were able to ask Fido how he would want to recognize this special occasion, there’s a pretty good chance that his answer would involve treats. Read on as a local San Antonio, TX vet lists some safe snacks that will get your furry friend’s tail going.

Meat

Our canine pals always get excited about meat. Most types are fine for Fido. Just be sure it’s cooked and free of skin, bones, and fat. You do need to limit organ meats, such as liver and kidney, though: these are only safe in small amounts.

Ice Cream

Ice cream really is the ideal treat for a sweltering summer day. You can find some made just for Fido in many stores, but you can also make your own. Try combining 2 ripe bananas with a half cup natural peanut butter and 16 ounces of frozen yogurt. Just mix the ingredients, and pop in the freezer overnight. Done!

Homemade Dog Biscuits

If you enjoy cooking, you may want to try your paw at making dog biscuits. Here’s a simple recipe you can try. Combine 2 ½ cups whole-wheat flour, ½ cup canned pumpkin, 2 eggs, and 2 tablespoons natural peanut butter. You’ll want to add a bit of salt and a pinch of cinnamon. If it’s too thick, add a little water. Once you have a batter-like consistency, divide into small portions. You can use a bone-shaped cookie cutter if you like. (This is also helpful for distinguishing Fido’s cookies from people treats.) Cook at 350 for about 35-40 minutes.

Jerky

Jerky is a great snack for both you and your canine buddy, and it’s quite easy to make your own. Just slice fish, turkey, chicken, or beef into thin strips, place on a cookie sheet, and cook on low for several hours. For most meats, 8 to 10 hours at 145 should do it.

Store-Bought Treats

There’s nothing wrong with store-bought treats, and it’s probably safe to assume that you already have some on hand for Fido. However, if you want to splurge a bit, get your furry best friend a gourmet brand for this special occasion.
