National Pet Day

April 1, 2022

National Pet Day is April 11th! Our animal companions really have a special way of enriching our lives. That special friendship we share with our pets can be very powerful, and is certainly something to celebrate! A San Antonio, TX vet lists some basics on life with pets below.

Most Popular Pets

Fido has officially won the Most Popular Pet award. According to data from the American Pet Products Association, there are nearly 70 million pet dogs in the US. Fluffy is napping in second place: Americans have about 45 million pet kitties. Fish, surprisingly, are the third-most popular pet, followed by birds, pocket pets, and reptiles.

Benefits Of Having Pets

The best thing about having a pet? The joy and love they bring into our lives! Your furry buddy will always be happy to see you, and wants nothing more than to hang out with you. Pets also offer us comfort and support, and can be very soothing on bad days. In fact, hanging out with your pet may lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of strokes or heart attacks. They’re also great for kids! One potential benefit is stronger immunity. Studies have shown that kids who grow up with pets have better immune systems than those who don’t. (Turns out all that dust and fur is actually good for us.) They also provide children with comfort and companionship, and make great playmates, reading buddies, and listeners.

Earliest Pets

Have you ever wondered who the earliest pets were? That was most likely Fido. In fact, the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences has data on a dog skull that was dated back a whopping 32,000 years. Researchers have found dogs and cats in domestic burial sites that date back 12,000 years. And, by about 8000 years ago, dogs were being buried with objects of high value. It’s safe to say that those ancient pups were Very Good Boys!

Celebrating

This special occasion is definitely worth celebrating! Pick up a new toy for your pet, or get them a special treat. This can also be a great time for a photo session. Of course, if your pet hasn’t seen their vet in a while, make an appointment. Healthy pets are happy pets!
