Adopting A Rescued Rabbit

February 1, 2022

February is Adopt A Rescued Rabbit Month! While there’s no bad time to adopt Floppy, we are more than happy to spread the word about all of the cute, lovable bunnies out there who need loving homes. Of course, adopting a bunny—or any other pet—is a big commitment. You’ll need to do plenty of research, and know what you’re getting into. A San Antonio, TX vet discusses adopting a rescued rabbit below.

Bunnyproof

Don’t let that cute face fool you. Floppy can be quite destructive! It isn’t that rabbits try to destroy their humans’ things. They just have a very strong need to chew. Many people don’t realize this, and then get frustrated when their pets gnaw up their shoes or furniture legs. This is definitely a case of ‘Iff you can’t beat em, join em.’ You’ll need to offer lots of toys, and do plenty of bunnyproofing.

Don’t Force Attention

Rabbits are very cute, and they can form strong bonds with their humans. However, they’re also easily frightened. Many don’t really care for being held, but are perfectly happy curling up next to their humans. Never force attention on Floppy: that may scare her.

Hay, Hay, Hay

Floppy’s diet should mostly consist of hay. If you were to draw out a bunny food pyramid, fresh grass hay, such as Timothy hay, would make up most of it. You can supplement with commercial food and safe produce. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Expect A Little Mess

Rabbits can be potty-trained, but that will take time. In the meantime, you may need to pick up after Floppy. Bunny pellets are typically hard and dry, and don’t smell, so this isn’t as gross as you may think. However, it can still be a dealbreaker for some.

Be Prepared To Offer TLC

Floppy needs good TLC to thrive, just like any other pet. Don’t expect your furry pal to sit in her cage all day, with no interaction. You’ll need to give your little buddy several hours of playtime each day.

Enjoy The Binkies

Once Floppy has settled in and realized that she has it pretty good, you may start seeing the bunny happy dance, which is officially (okay, unofficially) known as the Binkie. Yes, they are as cute as they sound!
