Tips for Boarding Your Dog

December 15, 2020

Are you going away over the holidays? If so, you may be considering putting Fido in a kennel while you’re gone. Of course, your canine pal can’t make his own reservations or pack his suitcase, so it’s up to you to sort out the details. Here, a San Antonio, TX veterinarian discusses bringing your pup to his doggy hotel.

Get Recommendations

Choosing a good kennel is extremely crucial. Ask your vet for recommendations. You can also check with friends and family members, and read online reviews. Avoid any place that doesn’t require proof of Fido’s vaccinations, which should include the Bordetella vaccine. You’ll also want to visit the kennel yourself, and get a feel for the place.

Pack Properly

Kennels are all a bit different, and they can vary widely on details like what you can and can’t bring for Fido. Some will allow you to bring toys and bedding. Others prefer to use their own things, to ensure that everything is properly cleaned and sanitized. Make sure that you’re clear on what you should pack for your pooch. (Tip: it’s not a bad idea to pack some extra food and treats, just in case.)

Avoid Long Goodbyes

We know, it’s hard to leave your furry best friend behind! Fido may also give you that sad, confused look that will tug at your heartstrings. Avoid drawn-out farewells, though: it will only make it harder for you both. The better approach is to just make the drop-off short and sweet.

Give Pertinent Information

We love hearing funny stories about our furry guests. However, even though we may chuckle at hearing about Fido’s escapades in chasing the squirrel next door, it’s much more important for us to know that he’s allergic to corn or terrified of storms. Give any important information clearly, and both verbally and in writing.

Read The Paperwork

Take time to read through any paperwork you get from the kennel. Pay extra attention to any questions you need to answer. These small details can be very important! For instance, some kennels will ask if you want to be contacted with minor questions, or only in an emergency. You may also need to make sure Fido is up to date on his parasite control.
