Thanksgiving With Fido

November 15, 2020

Thanksgiving isn’t far off now! Your canine buddy will definitely stick close by as you prepare for the autumn holiday. Just be sure to put Fido’s health and safety first. The holidays can be dangerous for pets! A San Antonio, TX veterinarian discusses spending Turkey Day with your pup below.

Food

If our canine patients have one thing in common, it’s a love of food. Fido will definitely take note of those mouth-watering dishes. Be careful not to give your pup anything that isn’t safe for him! This list includes garlic, onions, scallions, and chives; grapes, currants, and raisins; chocolate; alcohol; avocado; pitted fruits; meat on the bone; and anything that contains xylitol and/or a lot of salt, sugar, or fat. Ask your vet for more information.

Begging

Does Fido have a begging habit? You may want to put him in a separate area during dinner. This can make some people quite nervous. You also don’t want to risk someone giving your pup something that isn’t safe for him.

Guests

Fido will be quite busy announcing guests. If your pooch gets a bit too enthusiastic about greeting people, put him in another area as people are coming and going. If you don’t have a fenced yard, you can put your furry friend in his crate for a while. Another option is to put him in a quiet back room with bedding, food, toys, and treats. Just don’t leave your pet in quarantine too long. Dogs are part of the family!

Zoomies

Do you have a super playful, energetic pooch? Before your guests arrive, take Fido for a long walk, and then tire him out with a fun play session. Your canine pal will be calmer after he’s burned off his excess energy.

Hazards

Never underestimate dogs’ ability to get into mischief! Keep Fido in mind when you are decorating. Anything that could be dangerous, such as candles, garlands, or anything small or sharp, should be placed in a spot he can’t reach. If you light a fire in your fireplace, use a thick grate.

Tail Wags

Dogs are definitely pretty high on the list of things we are grateful for. Brighten up your pup’s day by paying him lots of attention, and perhaps giving him a new toy.
