6 Ways to Keep Your Dog's Teeth Healthy

September 15, 2020

Dental issues are a very widespread problem with our canine companions. Just like people, dogs can develop a variety of painful issues. Keeping Fido’s choppers healthy is very important! A San Antonio, TX veterinarian offers some tips on this below.

Brushing

Brushing is just as beneficial for dogs as it is for people, if a bit more complicated. Fido can’t brush his own teeth, so you’ll need to do it for him. Of course, you’ll have to get him on board with the process. Start by gently massaging his teeth and gums. Then, once he’s used to this, slowly incorporate a pet toothbrush and yummy dog toothpaste. Offer lots of treats and praise to keep that tail going!

Exams

Your canine buddy should have his choppers checked by a vet at least once a year, starting at age one. The key isn’t to give your cute pet a perfect, pearly-white smile: it’s to correct issues that can cause pain or medical trouble.

Water

Keeping Fido hydrated is crucial to his basic needs, but it’s also important for his oral health. Make sure your furry best friend always has plenty of fresh, clean water. This will help rinse food particles away, keeping your pup’s mouth cleaner and preventing plaque buildup.

Watch For Warning Signs

Keep an eye out for signs of trouble. Some common ones include bad breath, bleeding gums, tartar buildup, drooling, dribbling food, swelling, and changes in behavior or eating habits. Call your vet immediately if you notice any of these issues.

Suitable Chew Toys

Chewing is actually very beneficial for dogs, provided they’re gnawing on something safe. Offer your canine pal lots of suitable chew toys. This will help keep his jaw muscles strong and increase saliva flow, which will help clean his mouth.

Doggy Dental Products

If your four-legged friend doesn’t like having his teeth brushed, ask your vet about other options. Dental-formula treats, kibble, and chews can all help fight plaque and tartar, which are the source of so many dental troubles. You can also offer your pooch dental flakes or an oral rinse. Here’s an easy hack: put some doggy toothpaste on a chew stick, and let Fido go to town on it.
