Cute Ways to Celebrate National Hamster Day

March 15, 2020

There’s a special holiday around the corner, and many of our tiniest patients would be quite excited about it. May 10th is National Hamster Day! If you have one of these little furballs, then you already know how cute and fun they are. Why not treat your pint-sized pal a bit? Here, a San Antonio, TX vet offers some tips on how to brighten up Hammie’s day.

Buddies

Runabout

Hamsters spend a lot of time in their cages. However, it’s not safe to let Hammie run around on his own, as he could easily slip away or get hurt. The runabout is a good solution to this. There are some caveats here, though. Be sure to get one that is the right size. Also, supervise your furry pal closely when he’s out, and don’t let him roll down stairs or into pools. After about 10 minutes, take him out and wash and disinfect the wheel.

Hay

Exercise Wheel

Most people advise putting an exercise wheel in Hammie’s cage, so he has a good way to get some exercise. This can be pretty cute to watch! Just choose a solid wheel, as the wire ones can cause injuries.

Suitable Treats

Photo Shoot

Hammie may be small, but he does take some adorable pictures. Look online for ideas. You can probably pick up some pretty cute props at thrift stores and yard sales. Just make sure that Hammie doesn’t eat his set!

Toys

Toys

Toys provide entertainment and enrichment, and also help promote good dental health. Buy or make your tiny furball some new playthings. You can make many of your pet’s things out of regular household items, such as cardboard, paper, and wicker goods.

Grooming

Maze

Mazes are very popular with these little guys! You can buy one for Hammie, or make one out of cardboard, paper mache, or even PVC.

Play Area

Treats

If there’s one thing all of our patients enjoy, it’s a yummy treat. Just be sure to stick with safe options. Hammie can have a bit of cheese, some cooked egg, a dog biscuit, mealworms, or safe fruits and veggies. Ask your vet for specific advice.

New Digs

Why not get your hamster a new hide box? You can also make your pet a cute little home out of a shoebox or tissue box.
