Pet ID Tips

May 15, 2019

Our furry pals are wonderful friends and companions. Fluffy and Fido look to us to care for them and love them. While a good pet care regimen starts with good nutrition, proper veterinary care, and a suitable shelter, other aspects of pet care are also important. One thing that is crucial is making sure your pet has proper ID. Read on as a local San Antonio, TX vet discusses pet ID.

Microchips

If your pet hasn’t been microchipped yet, we strongly advise getting this done right away. Although a microchip is only the size of a grain of rice, it’s an absolutely crucial device. Each chip contains a unique ID, which can be read with special scanners. This ID number correlates to your records in the chipmaker’s database, forming an invisible link between you and your furry friend. The microchipping process is very simple. A vet will use a hypodermic needle to insert the chip beneath your pet’s skin. You’ll also need to fill out your records for the chipmaker’s database. The chip won’t do any good if your contact information is missing or outdated! (Tip: if your pet has been chipped, try using the AAHA Pet Microchip Lookup, which is located here , to view and update your records.)

Tags

Microchips are very important, but they don’t replace tags. In fact, if your pet is ever lost, tags will be the easiest way for someone to reach you. If you’re concerned about your furry buddy getting caught on something, use breakaway tags.

Kennels/Carriers

Put your contact information on your pet’s carrier or kennel, especially when you are traveling. You don’t necessarily have to put your address on it, but make sure your name and phone number are in a visible spot. You can use luggage tags, or write the information on a little card and then cover it with tape so it won’t rub off.

Tips

Always keep copies of your pet’s registration with you. You may want to put copies in the glove compartment of your car. Or, you can take pictures of them with your phone. Another option is to email copies to yourself, so you can access them from almost anywhere. We also recommend putting multiple numbers on your pet’s ID.
