Dog Walking Safety Tips

March 1, 2019

Does your canine buddy get excited when he knows he’s about to go for a walk? That happy dance dogs do is super cute! Fido loves his daily strolls. Just put your dog’s health and safety first. Read on as a San Antonio, TX vet offers some tips on walking your furry friend.

Gear

A sturdy leash is definitely a must. Retractable leashes can be great, but they can be dangerous in certain situations. You don’t want to use them near busy streets, for instance. If the mechanism jams, Fido could run out into traffic!

Training

Make sure your canine friend knows—and obeys—basic obedience commands, like Sit , Stay , Come , Heel , and Lay Down . If Fido doesn’t have these down yet, take him back to school!

Weather

Limit your dog’s outdoor time in bad weather, especially if he is a puppy or a senior. When it’s really hot out, walk your pet in the morning and evenings, when it’s a little cooler out. If you’re going to be gone for more than a few minutes, take some water with you.

Location

Our canine companions love to explore, but that sense of adventure can get them into trouble. Don’t let Fido approach areas that could be housing snakes, gators, or other dangerous animals. You’ll also want to stay away from potentially-dangerous plants, such as foxtail grasses.

Traffic

When walking on the side of a road, stay to the inside, and keep Fido on the outside. Drivers will likely spot you first, as you’re taller. We also recommend walking on the left side of the road, facing oncoming traffic, so you can see what’s coming. Finally, keep your furry pal at your side, instead of letting him run out in front of you, especially when crossing driveways.

Sound

Many people like to wear ear buds when walking their canine pals. There’s nothing wrong with this, but you do need to be able to hear what’s going on around you. Don’t turn the volume up too loud!

Night Walks

When walking your furry buddy after dark, you’ll want to take a few extra precautions. Always bring a phone and flashlight with you, and use reflective gear. Keep nighttime walks short, and stick to safe, well-lit routes.
