Helping a Shelter Dog Settle In

November 1, 2017

Are you planning to adopt a shelter dog soon? If so, that’s wonderful! We love seeing pups go to good homes. In this article, a San Antonio, TX discusses helping a shelter dog settle in.

Supplies

Before you bring Fido home, you’ll need to get some doggy necessities. Your pet will need food, toys, treats, bedding, grooming supplies, dishes, a leash, a collar or harness, waste baggies, and a good crate. Set your pet’s things up in a quiet back room, so he has a safe, comfy place to relax and adjust. You’ll want to start your canine buddy on his new schedule for walks, meals, and playtime right away. However, don’t be surprised if he sleeps a lot at first. Being in a shelter can be very scary for dogs. If your pooch was rescued after Harvey, he may also have been traumatized by that experience. It’s normal for dogs to need time to recuperate after a tough time.

Storm Survivors

If Fido was rescued after the hurricane, he may be frightened of storms. When bad weather is approaching, put him in a quiet back room with bedding, toys, and a treat. Turn a radio or TV on to mask the noise.

Veterinary Care

We recommend scheduling a veterinary appointment ASAP. Fido will need a thorough exam. You’ll also want to make sure he is current on his vaccinations and parasite control products. If your furry pal hasn’t been microchipped and spayed or neutered, you’ll want to see to that as well. This is also a good chance to get professional advice on your pup’s diet and care needs.

Exercise

Make sure Fido has plenty of toys, and is getting the right type and amount of exercise. Most dogs need at least a daily walk. This will help your pooch burn off excess energy, entertain him, and keep him strong and fit. It’s also a great way for you to bond with your pup. Ask your vet for advice.

Tail Wags

Dogs are wonderful friends, but that bond takes time to develop. Don’t force attention on Fido. Just give him time to adjust to settle in. Focus on getting to know your pet, and offering great care. You’ll have that tail going in no time!
