Signs of Dental Issues in Dogs

February 15, 2017

February is Pet Dental Care Month! Did you know that up to 80 percent of adult dogs have some form of gum disease? Although gum disease is painless and asymptomatic at first, it is very dangerous. The infection can spread from Fido’s gums to his major organs, and can play a role in some very serious medical issues, like heart disease. Our canine pals can also suffer from many other dental problems, which can be very painful. Taking care of your dog’s teeth is very important! A local San Antonio, TX vet lists some common signs of doggy dental issues below.

Excessive Drool

While some dogs are just naturally, well, a bit slobbery, Fido shouldn’t be a drool machine. Excessive, ropy, or bloody drool can all be warning signs of dental trouble.

Bad Breath

Could Fido’s breath kill plants? If so, your pup may need his teeth checked: bad breath can be a sign of dental problems.

Reduced Appetite

Chewing on a sore tooth isn’t any more pleasant for dogs than it is for us. If Fido’s choppers are hurting him, he may take longer eating than he used to. He could also start preferring softer foods, or not eat as much as he should.

Crankiness

Toothaches really don’t do much for anyone’s mood. This is also the case with dogs. Fido may seem grumpy if his teeth are bothering him. He may also not want his mouth touched.

Lack of Interest in Playing

Are your furry friend’s favorite toys gathering dust? Fido may not feel very playful if he has a toothache. A lack of interest in play can be a sign of doggy dental woes.

Tartar Buildup

Does your pooch have yucky gunk built up on his teeth? If so, Fido may need a good deep cleaning. This isn’t just about aesthetics: tartar buildup often goes hand in hand with gum disease.

Tips

Many of these warning signs can be indicative of other medical issues. If your four-legged buddy has any of these symptoms, contact your vet immediately. Of course, when it comes to health issues in dogs, an ounce of prevention can be worth several pounds of cure. Ask your vet for advice on keeping your pet’s teeth clean and healthy.
