Barbeque Safety for Pets

July 15, 2016

Barbequing is a classic summer tradition, and one that is especially beloved here in the Lone Star State. If you have a dog, your canine friend will no doubt enjoy hanging out with you when you fire up the grill. Just be sure to put Fido’s safety first. Barbecues can be very dangerous for dogs! Below, a local San Antonio, TX vet discusses barbeque safety for dogs.

Fire

Fire and pets do not mix! Keep Fido away from the grill, especially if it’s a smaller one he could potentially knock over.

Heat

Summertime’s heat can be hard on our canine pals. Make sure Fido has plenty of water, and a cool, shady place to relax in. Also, watch for signs of heat exhaustion. Panting and drooling are early warning signs. More advanced symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, discolored gums, diarrhea, and trembling. If you see any of these red flags, give Fido water and take him to a cool spot, then call your vet.

Chemicals

Citronella candles, bug spray, lighter fluid, and other chemicals are very dangerous for Fido. Keep these things away from your pooch.

Food

Food is one of the biggest concerns for dogs at barbeques. Many popular foods are toxic to our canine buddies. Some of the things you should never give Fido include chocolate; alcohol; grapes, currants, and raisins; avocados (including that delicious guacamole dip); meat on the bone; raw yeast, meat, or dough; and anything containing xylitol. Garlic, onions, scallions, and chives are also dangerous, and are a particular concern because they are often used as seasonings or toppings.

Trash

As soon as everyone finishes eating, pick up the trash. Use a container that closes tightly, in case Fido gets any bright ideas about fishing for leftovers. Bones and barbeque skewers are both hazardous for dogs, so pick these up right away.

Gates

Keep a close eye on your furry friend as guests are coming or going. You don’t want Fido slipping out an open door or gate!

Preventative Care

Fleas and ticks are a yearlong nuisance here, but they are especially active in hot weather. Mosquitos also come out in droves, and are a big concern because they transmit heartworms. Keep up with Fido’s parasite control products and important vaccines.
