How to Get Rid of Pet Odors in the Home

June 1, 2016

Our dogs and cats bring us plenty of wonderful things—joy, companionship, amusement, and much more! Of course, they can also bring pesky odors. If your home is starting to smell a little too much like your animal companion, use these tips from a San Antonio, TX vet to combat the odors.

Groom Your Pet

You’ll be amazed at what regular grooming can do to help lessen pet odors around the home. Brush your animal friend every day or every other day; not only does this prevent loose and dead hair from winding up all over your carpets and furniture, it spreads essential skin oils through the coat to keep it naturally healthy, reduce shedding, and cut down on smells.

Vacuum and Dust

It’s no fun, but there’s just no substitute for regular cleaning, vacuuming, and dusting. Be sure to pay special attention to surfaces that may trap dander, like pillows, cushions, fluffy carpets, etc. Also take care to dust windowsills, shelves, and ledges that may harbor pet hair and dander. For serious smells, a thorough carpet shampooing may be in order.

Wash Pet Bed

Pet beds can often become sources of odor since pets spend so much time on them. It’s especially likely if your pet is the type to take food to the bed and eat it there. Make sure to toss your pet’s bed in the washing machine every once in a while to keep it smelling fresh. You can also try sprinkling a bit of baking soda on the bed, leaving it for a few hours before removing it, and then giving it back to your pet.

Odor Neutralizer Products

Air fresheners are good at masking smells for a time, but they don’t get rid of them permanently. Odor neutralizers, however, combat the enzymes that cause odors at their root. Pick up a pet-specific odor neutralizer at your local pet supply shop or retail outlet.

Try Space Restrictions

Some pets are just naturally odorous. In these cases, space confinements may help. This means using dog gates or even baby gates to restrict your pet’s movements to one floor of the home, or perhaps only allowing them up on one piece of furniture rather than all of them. This way, the area you’re tasked with keeping clean and fresh is much smaller and easier to manage.
