Cleaning Tips for Cat Owners

December 1, 2015

Kitties have many endearing qualities. Those cute little faces, adorable sounds, quirky habits, and pretty coats make these little furballs wonderful pets and companions. Our feline friends aren’t always a great help when it comes to housekeeping, however. In this article, a San Antonio, TX vet offers some cleaning tips for people that are owned by cats.

Dining Area

Use placemats under Fluffy’s dinner bowls and water dishes to keep spills off the floor. Clean the mats regularly, and replace them when they get worn out. Another option is to use a large tray.

Fur

Did you know that a dry or slightly damp sponge works great at getting fur off upholstery and drapes? You can also use a squeegee, or a rubber cleaning glove.

Vacuum

Vacuum and dust your home regularly to remove dead fur and dander. We recommend changing your air filters frequently. You may also want to consider investing in a good, quality air filter, especially if you have friends or family members with allergies.

Furniture

Slipcovers will help keep your furniture clean. Look for ones that are easy to remove and wash.

Clothing

Fluffy’s pretty fur definitely looks better on her than it does on you! Keep a lint roller handy to keep your clothes fur-free.

Urine Stains

If your feline pal is soiling outside of her private bathroom, you’ll want to figure out why before you can address the problem. Anxiety, illness, and territorial marking are a few options. Have your vet examine her to rule out medical issues. In the meantime, you’ll want to get the urine out of your carpet. You’ll need an enzyme-based cleaner, paper towels, a brush, and baking soda. Use the paper towels to soak up as much moisture as you can. Then, spray the stain with the cleaner, and pour baking soda on it. Use the brush to work the baking soda into the carpet. Let it dry, and then vacuum it up.

Beds

Wash your furball’s beds regularly. Use hot water and unscented detergent, and dry it on the hottest cycle. We recommend washing your pet’s bedding weekly.

Litterbox

Scoop Fluffy’s litterbox out daily, and change the litter about once a week. Use a mat to trap any loose litter.
